Lately the news has been so fevered and ridiculous that people have taken it upon themselves to tell me about it. Looking at you, Swine Flu.
I keep around me at all times a protective bubble of ignorance where the news is concerned. It is no path to happiness.
In my opnion, it comes in these forms:
1. list of dead or injured
2. propaganda
3. scares, epidemics
This is why I avoid it at all costs. In my new office there’s a huge TV that occasionally is allowed to be on and jabber incessantly. If I catch it on I turn it off.
It is possible to live a best and highest use productive life without ever being told how many people are dead in Mexico. I can’t help them anyway, and I have bigger issues at hand.
In my opinion, you can be a lot happier and a lot more effective if you concentrate your efforts on things that are within your circle of influence. I’m not alone, as anyone who has read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People can tell you.
As an example, my buddy’s dad died, and he needs support. I’m going to the funeral tomorrow in Greenville. Maybe I can help somehow, maybe I can’t. I can certainly be there, though.
I can’t do a damn thing but fret about the pandemic that the TV is trying to scare me with. Just sit on my couch and sweat and worry.
No thanks.
