My name is Jim Hodgson and I live in Atlanta, GA. This is the story in progress about my year in high gear and my training progress as I attempt an Ironman race on August 30th, 2009. As you can see at right, I used to be extremely fat at 320lbs. This year I am trying to conquer that fatness once and for all.

This site contains personal photos, random thoughts about life and notes about my athletic goals and training which I describe candidly and with no concessions for appropriate language.

I also have a work site that describes what I'm up to professionally and my thoughts on new media and our new marketing landscape.

So, to business. My goal for 2009 is to live one year in high gear. Eating the right way, laying off the beers and most importantly, completing an Ironman triathlon in August. Follow my progress here.

Athletics

I have three major athletic goals for 09 and a lot of smaller ones.

Big goals
- No Drinking I haven't had a drink since New Year's Eve, or 6 months ago.
- Phase I - Marathon - Finished 4:45. Raised $1800. This is 3 months ago.
- Phase II - Half Ironman race - Finished - Swim: 43:49, Bike: 2:44:33, Run: 2:53:23 overall: 6:30:16 This is 2 months ago.
- Phase III - Full Ironman race - My biggest athletic goal for this year is to complete an Ironman race in Louisville, Kentucky on August 30th. It'll be 140.6 miles total, made up of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and a 26.2 mile marathon run. This is 2 months away.
Smaller goals
- a sub 20 minute 5k. Last time was 24:05. Improved from last year's 38min.
- ACHIEVED a sub 50 minute 10k. Charles Harris 10k, Feb 22 2009 47:21 7:38 pace. Now I want sub 7:00 pace or less than 43:30
- top ten place in Cyclocross race in the fall. Finished 20th for the season this year.
Bike Racing
- I'm the sponsorship coordinator for a bicycle team called Faster Mustache. I raced the 08 Cyclocross season (finished 20th), and had a blast. Can't wait for summer.

Art

Theatre
- I am the master carpenter at the Dunwoody Stage Door theatre. I get to build things out of wood and use a big honkin drill and saws and wahtnot. It's great fun and it's nice to be paid for it too.
Music
- Jim Hodgson Band (iTunes) - Since I'm not playing with Sonia Leigh anymore, I'll probably be booking some gigs for myself again, although it's the holidays right now so everyone is scattered. Eventually I'd like to work on another record.
- I'm also in the preliminary phases of being involved with a couple other projects that I can't talk about yet. But they're still there... or not.
Ye Olde Written Worde
- I write little stories and poems on this blog. Blog blog blog. Dislike that word.
Visual Art
- Sam Thacker music video - I've been invited to go on the Rock Boat with my buddy Sam Thacker and his band to film a music video. I can't wait. That happens on Jan 16th.
- I've also gotten into watercolor painting, which is hard.

my day off

I haven’t done a fucking thing all day. I drove my girl to the airport this morning for her business trip, and since then I’ve been fucking off in a big way. I did go to the bank, though.

Yay me!

I even remembered when to turn the TV on to catch Deadwood and The Sopranos because I missed them on Sunday.

Right now I’m watching an action movie. An asian guy is beating up a bunch of white supremacists.

The white supremacists had their big fort or camp or whatever inside some sort of fuel refinery I guess, because every time someone shoots a gun, something big explodes. Stupid white supremacists.

Hbo.com says the movie is called “Best of the best 3: No turning back”.

Well, allrighty.
